After the birth of Joomla from Mambo, We all welcomed the new CMS with lots of expectations. And really it grew well. Now Joomla has the best supporters community than any other CMS community. Getting reply from a Joomla forum is easier and quicker. Hence everyone adopted Joomla and left Mambo. Although the core was not much different, so the users did not have to pay money for migration from Mambo to Joomla.
But, On Monday, 13th, October 2008, In the official Joomla blog it has been clearly stated that they are going to say farewell to Joomla 1.0 on July 22, 2009. It means there will be no more supports for the Joomla 1.0 . I am not sure, how they are going to deal with security holes , suppose if it is found in Joomla 1.0 after that farewell.
July 2009 is not that much far. If you are having lots of sites with lots of components in Joomla 1.0, then you feel the pain in migration to Joomla 1.5. Conversion of Joomla 1.0 to Joomla 1.5 is also technical thing. Well, we do that conversion. It may take up to 1 day for conversion with all changes required. However, Converting a component or module to Joomla 1.5 version is absolutely a money thing. You will definitely need to pay a lot for that. Suppose if they are GPL components or modules, and the developers are in continuous development, we can expect 1.5 versions from the same people. But in the commercial area, I generally see that developers are selling components in 1.5 and 1.0 version which means you need to separately the components or modules for 1.5 version.
Although there is a mode called “legacy” where you can run your 1.0 modules and components in 1.5 Joomla, it is not a desired mode in my personal view. And we may not know when the plugins will stop to work. Because, all functionalities of 1.0 do not go friendly with 1.5. Ok, so what is the solution or answer for this blog title. Yes, Of course , we need to upgrade if we want to run our Joomla site for ever with full security. I remember the old times, when I ran Windows 95 and hesitated to install Windows Millennium version. Then I really liked Windows 98. After that until now I stick with Windows XP. Well, the process is nature. All applications do not obey Windows 98 or 95. We have to switch to XP for features and speed of execution of applications. (Windows 95, 98, XP are trademarks of Microsoft).
I am not English. Hence I have written what I know better and in better English. Thanks for reading. |
