Spotlight: In the mid-1800s, the word "prohibition" went from indicating a ban on anything to meaning a ban on the manufacture, transportation, import, export and sale of alcoholic beverages. The Prohibition movement began in the 1840s in the US, but it wasn't until the 1880s that the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the Prohibition Party were able to make legal headway in the drive to make America "dry," resulting in the passing of the 18th Amendment of the US Constitution in 1919. The much-disputed amendment was finally repealed on this date in 1933, when Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution.
