| Michael Prokop has announced the release of grml 2008.11, a Debian-based live CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for users of text tools and system administrators: "grml version 2008.11 has been released and is currently being uploaded to the mirrors. What's new? New grml-scripts: grml-chroot - wrapper around chroot with proc/sys/pts/dev file system handling; swspeak-setup - activating software speak(up) features. The grml-live build system: several new packages in the different flavour classes; improved error handling; improved checks for LZMA for different Squashfs tools; automatically activate grml-testing repository for development releases and daily snapshots. | Volker Theile has announced the availability of the second release candidate for FreeNAS 0.69, a FreeBSD-based operating system providing free Network-Attached Storage (NAS) services: "This will hopefully be the last release candidate before a stable release can be published. So please test this version and report any problems. Changes: upgrade to FreeBSD 6.4-RELEASE; add system firewall, please note that this is only for the local system and not for the network (this will also never be implemented, use pfSense or m0n0wall instead); upgrade Transmission to 1.40; introduce new WebGUI look (also fixes some MSIE rendering bugs); add UPS service WebGUI option to define shut-down mode; add option 'Use sendfile' to 'Services CIFS/SMB Settings'; check if configured port is already used (e.g. UPnP, BitTorrent, DAAP); fix web server security hole...." | Tilman Sauerbeck has announced the availability of the first release candidate for CRUX 2.5, a minimalist, i686-optimised Linux distribution built for power users: "The first release candidate for the upcoming CRUX 2.5 release is available now. Release notes: includes glibc 2.8, GCC 4.3.2 and Binutils 2.19; Linux kernel 2.6.27.x; ships with X.Org 7.4; glibc does not contain all possible locales any more, see handbook; the runtime linker configuration has been greatly simplified by adding a configuration directory /etc/ld.so.conf.d; GCC depends on libgmp and libmpfr now, both have been added to core; a new port inetutils replaces inetd, netkit-ftp and netkit-telnet; hotplug has been removed because it wasn't in use since a long time; libpcre has been added to core; slocate has been replaced by mlocate; cdrtools has been replaced by cdrkit." NEW • Distribution Release: Parted Magic 3.2 |
| Patrick Verner has announced the release of Parted Magic 3.2, the latest version of another distribution specialising in hard disk partitioning: "Parted Magic 3.2. This is mostly a bug-fix release for the 3.x series with a few new features. Some of the new updates include GParted 0.4.0, Linux kernel 2.6.27.7, Xarchiver 0.5.1, dc3dd 6.12.2, and hdparm 9.2. Jason fixed the disk wiping program and some other issues were addressed as well. The newest and most powerful new feature is 'installpkg' from Slackware Linux. You can now add programs to Parted Magic by simply adding them to the pmodules directory and booting the machine. Parted Magic automatically installs them at boot. There are several tested TGZ packages available in the forum for download. Make sure you change the tmpfs_size= boot parameter to allow more RAM for your additional packages." NEW • Distribution Release: GParted LiveCD 0.3.9-13 |
| A new stable version of GParted LiveCD, a Debian-based specialist distribution with a collection of hard disk management utilities, has been released. What's new? "This release is a bug-fix release with some minor updates; based on Debian 'Lenny' on 2008-11-27, Linux kernel 2.6.26; a program called MC_HxEd was added; package cryptsetup was added; instead of entering X window automatically, we can choose to configure xorg.conf first; new mechanism to start GParted LiveCD; two more boot parameters gl_numlk and gl_capslk were added to control numlock and scrlock; ifupdown and dhcp3-client were added; bug fixed - PartImage was missing." | FreeBSD 6.4, a new stable version of the project's legacy 6.x branch, has been released: "The FreeBSD Release Engineering team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 6.4-RELEASE. At this time 6.4-RELEASE is expected to be the last of the 6-STABLE releases. Some of the highlights: new and much-improved NFS Lock Manager (NLM) client; support for the Camellia cipher; boot loader changes allow, among other things, booting from USB devices and booting from GPT-labeled devices with GPT-enabled BIOSes; DVD install ISO images for amd64 and i386; KDE updated to 3.5.10, GNOME updated to 2.22.3; updates for BIND, Sendmail, OpenPAM, and other packages." | The first and only release candidate for openSUSE 11.1 is out and ready for final testing: "The openSUSE Project is happy to announce that openSUSE 11.1 RC 1 is now available. If all goes well, this will be the last testing release before the final 11.1 public release on December 18th. This release includes a number of bug fixes and changes since 11.1 beta 5, as well as a new license. It is ready for widespread testing, and we are encouraging everyone to download and work with the testing releases to find any critical bugs before release. | Philip Newborough has announced the release of CrunchBang Linux 8.10.01, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring the light-weight Openbox window manager and GTK+ applications: "The final build of CrunchBang Linux 8.10.01 is now available. This is the third release of the distribution and as the version number suggests, it is based on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex. As with previous releases, 8.10.01 has been built from scratch using the Ubuntu minimal CD. What's new?
