In an effort to standardize their security efforts, Microsoft has made
a radical decision regarding users of their older operating systems:
stop supporting them. Estranging an estimated 200 million people, Microsoft has decided to stop releasing security patches for their popular built-in web browser, Internet Explorer, on any operating system save for Windows XP, Service Pack 2. While this new, extreme move on Microsoft's part may be intended to drive upgrades to Windows XP (which would cost $99/upgrade, or $199 from scratch), it may have the opposite effect. Many alternative browsers are now available and gaining in popularity, the strongest of which is Mozilla Firefox. TNTmax recommends a move for users of older operating systems (such as Windows 2000, 98, & ME) to an alternative browser in lieu of a costly upgrade to Windows XP. Firefox is available, open-source, and free. For more information on this new development, go to this news.com article. |
