5 Tips for Improving the Security of Your Mobile Device

June 23, 2023by Christine Becker

Do you know how secure your mobile device is? These days, most of us own a smartphone. But how many of us actually consider the security threats we can encounter on these devices?

Unfortunately, mobile devices are susceptible to numerous types of cybersecurity threats. In fact, these attacks are becoming more and more common as cybercriminals continue to target phones through malicious applications, texts and links. Through these malicious activities, they can gain access to important personal and business information without the user even knowing it’s happening.

However, there are ways to protect yourself before it happens! Here are five best practices to implement now to minimize the risk, according to KnowBe4

Ensure your phone’s operating system is always up to date. Updates provided by your mobile device often fix security flaws that can be exploited by malicious threats. Sometimes, these updates are automatic, but be sure to keep an eye on alerts for new updates that might need to be installed manually. Neglecting to update can leave your device vulnerable to potential risks caused by outdated operating systems.

Be aware of malicious apps in the app store. Official app stores make efforts to remove malware-infected apps, yet occasionally these dangerous applications manage to bypass security measures and deceive unsuspecting users. Stay vigilant by doing thorough research, reading reviews and noting the number of downloads. And always refrain from downloading apps from unofficial sources.

Note what access apps are asking for. You should always ensure applications are not asking for access to things on your phone that are irrelevant to their function. When downloading applications, they often request permissions to access files, folders, other apps and data. Don’t grant these permissions without consideration. If the requested permissions appear unnecessary, explore alternative applications within your app store.

Use strong password protection. Using strong passwords on your smartphone is crucial for safeguarding your personal information. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, protecting sensitive data, financial accounts and other personal information. It serves as a first line of defense against potential breaches and ensures the security of your smartphone and its contents.

Be cautious of public WiFi. Although it can be tempting to use them, public Wi-Fi should be avoided as much as possible. These networks are often unsecured, making it easier for hackers to intercept sensitive information transmitted over the network.
